This boxcar was purchased from Amtrak, who was using it as a storage
shed for tools and equipment for catenary work, just before it was
about to be scrapped.
It was located at the M
of W facility in Morrisville, PA.
This round roof boxcar was built in May 1936
as a replacement for the X29, because the industry at the time wanted
a boxcar with a greater interior height.
This boxcar was originally built as PRR 80599
and was re-numbered when it went into "S" service for
the Pennsy.
The"as built" number was found on a
Conrail roster from 1979. I wondered how an Amtrak MoW car ended
up on a Conrail roster. Fortunately, a railfan friend of mine who
has been with Amtrak MoW for almost 30 years described it this way:
PRR built the wire train, which this boxcar was part of for catenary
work. Well, PRR later merged into Penn Central, and after that,
Penn Central became part of Conrail. Conrail eventually gave up
passenger service and the Northeast Corridor and that is how Amtrak
ended up with this car.
The "as built" paint scheme is the
circle keystone design. That is how I plan to paint the boxcar.
